#48 – HP Inc.: Advancing How We Live and Work
“To advance the way people live and work.”
This is the purpose statement by HP Inc., the iconic American tech company that has helped define the modern digital era.
Founded in 1939 by Bill Hewlett and David Packard in a small garage in Palo Alto, California, Hewlett-Packard is widely recognized as the original Silicon Valley startup.
The company’s first product, an audio oscillator, became the seed of a technological revolution that would transform how people interact with information, work, and each other.
Over the decades, HP grew into one of the largest technology companies in the world, manufacturing personal computers, printers, digital imaging devices, and 3D printing solutions, becoming a fixture in homes, schools, and offices across the globe.
In 2015, Hewlett-Packard was split into two publicly traded entities: HP Inc., focused on consumer devices and printing solutions, and Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE), focused on enterprise IT infrastructure, services, and cloud solutions.
HP Inc. retained the original company’s stock price history and branding continuity, while HPE inherited the B2B enterprise business.
Today, HP Inc. operates in over 170 countries and employs more than 58,000 people, with a clear focus on sustainable innovation, circular economy practices, and digital equity initiatives. In 2023, it reported over $53 billion in revenue, maintaining its position among the top global PC vendors.
Its purpose is a strategic lens through which it approaches innovation and environmental responsibility. From enabling remote work and learning to accelerating 3D printing for sustainable production, HP continues to turn its purpose into impact.
A company born in a garage has become a blueprint for how purpose can scale, from analog roots to digital relevance.
