#27 – Alpro: Accessible Plant-Based Nutrition

“To convert everyone’s minds and mouths to the wonders of plant-based.”

This is the purpose statement of Alpro, the Belgian plant-based food company headquartered in Ghent, founded in 1980 as a subsidiary of Vandemoortele Groep, now part of Danone.

This purpose is not surface-level marketing — it has shaped Alpro’s trajectory from day one. The company has consistently invested in making plant-based nutrition accessible, sustainable, and delicious, building on four decades of innovation.

Alpro now employs over 1,200 people across Europe and runs three production facilities located in Belgium, France, and the UK, distributing products in over 50 countries.

By 2008, the company had tripled its revenues since 2000, confirming its leadership in Europe’s plant-based category.

Alpro’s environmental credentials went beyond product scope. It became a certified B Corp, telling a credible story of health and ecological accountability, and earning recognition by being named Best For The World™ in the Environment category in 2022.

They also integrate sustainability throughout their operations:

  • Committing to regenerative agriculture,

  • Implementing 100% renewable electricity across production sites,

  • Engaging in food-waste reduction programs, donating hundreds of tonnes of plant-based products through partnerships like Too Good To Go Belgium and food banks.

Alpro’s purpose isn’t just stamped on products. It acts as the blueprint for a food brand that chose to lead in health, sustainability, and innovation, rather than follow.
