#20 – Italgas: Builders By Vocation

“Pioneers by passion and builders by vocation, we offer all our energy to accelerate the ecological transition”

is the purpose statement by Italgas, the historic Italian gas distributor headquartered in Milan and operating since 1837.

Founded even before the unification of Italy, Italgas has powered more than a century of urban and industrial development across the country.

But legacy alone is not enough.

What makes Italgas a purpose-driven player today is its ability to redefine its role in the context of the climate crisis.

The company’s purpose is seen in a €7.8 billion investment plan to modernize infrastructure, digitize over 80% of its network, and shift decisively toward renewable gases like biomethane and hydrogen.

Italgas now manages over 81,000 km of network, reaching more than 1,800 municipalities — and it’s doing so with the ambition to be a catalyst for ecological transition in Italy and Europe.

In a sector often seen as inert or slow to evolve, Italgas demonstrates that when driven by purpose, legacy utilities can become innovation leaders.

When energy companies move with clarity of intention, infrastructure becomes transformation.
