#16 – Stellantis, A Huge Gap Between Words And Behavior

“Powered by our diversity, we lead the way the world moves”

by Stellantis, the Dutch multinational automotive manufacturer.

This purpose statement incorporates what a modern, forward-thinking automotive company should represent: leveraging diverse perspectives to innovate and shape the future of mobility.

The statement suggests inclusivity, leadership, and transformative impact.

However, recent events paint a stark contrast: 22 billion in profits over four years, yet 12,000 jobs at risk, alongside a 100 million severance package for the CEO.

This disconnect between purpose and action reveals a fundamental challenge in corporate culture: the gap between inspiring words and actual behavior.

What's the true meaning of "powered by diversity" when taking harmful decisions that involve thousands of workforce members, undermining the very essence of its stated purpose.

Leading "the way the world moves" should encompass ethical leadership and responsible stewardship of human capital, not just technological advancement.

This case exemplifies why purpose statements cannot be mere marketing tools.

True purpose must inspire decision-making and guiding behaviors at any levels, especially during challenging times.

When actions contradict stated values, it erodes trust and reinforces cynicism and disillusion about corporate purpose initiatives.

The lesson? A compelling purpose statement is only the beginning.

The real test comes in how companies align their decisions, resource allocation, and treatment of stakeholders with their declared purpose.

Without this alignment, even the most beautifully crafted purpose statements become hollow promises.
