#57 – AT&T: Connecting to Possibility

“Connecting people to greater possibility, with expertise, simplicity, and inspiration”

— by AT&T, the telecommunications company whose origins trace back to 1877, when Alexander Graham Bell founded the Bell Telephone Company following the invention of the telephone.

Few companies can claim to have fundamentally altered how human beings relate to one another.

For most of human history, communication was constrained by geography. Messages travelled no faster than people, horses, trains, or ships could carry them. The invention of the telephone changed that equation forever.

AT&T emerged from that breakthrough and spent nearly 150 years building the infrastructure that transformed communication from a local activity into a global capability.

Today, the company serves more than 100 million wireless subscribers, operates one of the largest telecommunications networks in the United States, and generates annual revenues exceeding $120 billion.

Its purpose is rooted in this history because communication has never been an end in itself.

People do not buy connectivity because they want a network. They seek connectivity because they want access to opportunities: a conversation, a job, an education, a customer, a community, an idea, a solution.

The more communication barriers disappear, the more possibilities emerge.

This is why the purpose is interesting. It shifts attention away from technology and toward human potential.

Networks, fiber, satellites, and 5G infrastructure are merely the means. The real outcome is what becomes possible once people are able to connect.

And if the twentieth century was about connecting voices, the twenty-first century is increasingly about connecting capabilities.

The challenge for AT&T is no longer building larger networks. It is ensuring that the possibilities created by those networks continue to expand faster than the barriers that limit access to them.
